Travels to Guinea, Africa

These photos are from Conakry, Guinea in West Africa in 2003 where Dan is working with an African theatre troupe. Together they are sharing techniques in warm-ups and theatre-related exercises. The smaller group is rehearsing A Winter's Tale and the larger group is part of a dance ensemble that was giving a performance. Dan's father, Andrew Gordon, a wandering anthropologist professor who does much of his studies in West Africa and Latin America has provided this and other opportunities; and many times Dan accompanies as the photojournalist.
Commedia dell'Arte

The importance of physical commedy, far less than a desire to return to 16th Century art, leads Dan to embrace Commedia Dell'Arte as a means to develop pertinent techniques that he first applied to the role of Tyl in Marvelous Adventures of Tyl, and, most recently to multiple roles in Peer Gynt. Here he is with Maestro Antonio Fava's summer workshop in Commedia. Maestro Fava's workshops, usually held in Italy, are an annual event in Philadelphia.
